Sea Wolf is a giclée art print featuring a stunning Sea Wolf in the ocean, showcasing its marine habitat. This mysterious creature is rarely seen by humans, and is only found along the Pacific Northwest coast in the entire world. They are a sub-species of Grey Wolf (they are also called Coastal Wolves), and 85% of their diet comes directly from the ocean and their marine environment. Recently footage of Sea Wolves learning to use tools to find food (which is very rare in the animal kingdom) has been captured — the wolves have learned how to haul crab traps out of the water to eat the bait, and they’re teaching each other how to do it. Their coats also reflect the marine environment with their rusty seaweed colours, and they are thicker to protect them from the frigid ocean water as they swim from island to island. There is still so much to discover about these elusive mammals, but they are a vital part of the PNW marine ecosystem as an apex predator.

This painting features warm greens and browns, and the surface of the ocean reflects the wolf in a very striking way. The original painting is painted in oils on canvas mounted to panel, and the reference image is used with permission of the wonderful BC photographer and conservationist Ian McAllister. This painting was inspired by the new David Attenborough documentary “Ocean,”  that film was heartbreaking (and yet hopeful), and was the inspiration to paint wildlife to help raise awareness of these magical creatures and the world that we need to protect. The original of this painting is currently for sale at the Orca Spirit Adventures gallery in Victoria BC, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to marine conservation and education organizations.
