This book review of the RSN (Royal School of Needlework) Book of Embroidery compendium, published by Search Press, will give you a good idea of the quality and content of the book, as we all know that buying books sight unseen can be sometimes a roll of the dice. Included are crewelwork, blackwork, whitework, silk shading, stumpwork, bead embroidery, canvaswork, bead embroidery, and goldwork. See “Related links” below for links to the book and the designers mentioned in the video, as well as links to embroidery classes.

The pros of the book:
- Amazing colour photographs
- You learn a bit about the history of each type of needlework
- Tools and materials needed, fabric, design styles, and stitching instructions are all included
- Also includes examples of projects to inspire you
- Great for learning traditional techniques direct from the RSN
The cons of the book:
-
You’re not going to find detailed full patterns for a complete project, but there are lots of designers out there who sell projects and patterns that complement this book (see links below)
